You may be interested to know on how a home water softener works. Basically a water softener is different than water filters. The sole purpose of a good water softener device/ machine is to convert hard water into soft water by removing unwanted and extra amount of minerals from running water in home or at industry. The subsequent paragraphs as well as video at the end details the steps on how a water softener system works.
Anyone who has had to use hard water, both at domestic and industrial levels, can attest to its irritating consequences. Hard water is known to scale sinks, walls, cooking and eating utensils among other things. Moreover, it clogs pipes, stain clothes and inhibit the action of soap in water. Statistics from a geological survey show that hard water accounts for about 85 percent of all the water in use in America. This is a huge figure which implies that virtually all Americans have, at some point in their lives, used it. Therefore, the need to soften hard water cannot be overstated.
What constitutes hard water? Someone may be tempted to ask. Water, being a good solvent, dissolves a wide range of substances. Among these solutes are minerals containing calcium and magnesium ions, commonly referred to as hardness ions. It is these ions that precipitate to form scales. Water softening requires the removal of these ions.
How then do water softeners work? The most widely used water softening methods employ an ion exchange principle. In this mechanism, the hardness ions in water are replaced by salt (sodium or potassium) ions which are essentially harmless. This entire process takes place in an ion exchange resin tank. Small resin beads are utilized to facilitate this exchange. The resin beads are covered with salt ions and placed in the tank. As the hard water flows over the beads, the hardness ions substitute places with the salt ions. The hard water is subsequently softened.
For effective water softening, it is important to recharge the resin beads with salt ions from time to time. This is because these ions are depleted during the operation. Salt bags are usually added to the resin tank for this purpose. Recharging works in a reverse fashion to water softening, that is, the salt ions replace the hardness ions on the resin beads.
